On April 18, 2013, as part of The National Physician Payment Transparency Program (OPEN PAYMENTS) initiative, CMS launched a new website to provide an informational resource to stakeholders. Section 6002 of the Affordable Care Act, referred to as OPEN PAYMENTS, has been established to create greater transparency around financial relationships of manufacturers, group purchasing organizations, physicians, and teaching hospitals. The website includes a wealth of information on why OPEN PAYMENTS are important, how they will work, frequently asked questions, and fact sheets for Applicable Manufacturers, GPO’s, Physicians, and Teaching Hospitals.
In addition, CMS has created a continuing medical education (CME) activity for physicians to learn more about OPEN PAYMENTS; steps involved in collecting and reporting physician data, dates for implementation, and actions that they can take to verify physician information in advance of website publication. Physicians can earn a maximum of 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit by participating in this activity.
